Valentine's day is one that is 'happy' for some, bitter for others. Love it or hate it, if you have a loved one, the expectation is that you purchase something (usual flowers) at around 100% higher cost than most other days out of the year.

While I'm a firm believer that you should love your loved one every day, if you choose not to do anything on Valentine's day, you can look like a schmuck. I usually do something simple here, such as this arrangement in this shot.

If all guys got together and boycotted the Hallmark-holiday, we'd probably be okay, but it only takes one to screw that up. Save the good stuff for birthdays and anniversaries where you don't have to pay a premium to show the love.
